Leonid Sotnik, age 9, Zaporizhzhia
I dream of becoming a vlogger. I love drawing cars because someday I’m definitely going to have a cool car and drive it on a road trip across the United States. My dream gives me the strength to keep going and believe in the future.
Leonid Sotnik is 9 years old and comes from Zaporizhzhia. Despite his young age, his life has already become a story of great struggle, strength, and incredible resilience. What Leonid has gone through is more than most adults could bear, but he continues to move forward—with dreams, faith, and true childlike determination. At age 3, his carefree childhood suddenly changed. Leonid contracted West Nile virus, and encephalomyelitis became a severe complication. The consequences were devastating—his body was completely paralyzed. Years of struggle lay ahead: 5 years of life on a ventilator, 5 years of fighting for literally every breath, every movement, every chance at a future. But Lonia proved to be a true fighter. Today, he is undergoing long-term treatment and rehabilitation in Lviv, and most importantly—there is positive progress. Small steps forward may seem insignificant to some, but for him, they are great victories, backed by daily hard work, patience, and strength. Despite all the challenges, Lony remains a curious, dreamy child. He loves to draw, especially cars—beautiful, fast, big ones. In his drawings, it’s as if he can already see his future. He adores cars, enthusiastically collects Hot Wheels, and can spend hours looking at his favorite models, making up his own stories about travels and adventures. His big dream is to become a vlogger. Lyonya wants to tell the world about his passions, share his life, show off his cars, and inspire others. He also sincerely believes that one day he’ll definitely have his own cool car, get behind the wheel, and set off on a big journey—all the way to the United States. It is this dream that gives him the strength to fight every day, not to give up, and to believe in the future. Because Lony is only 9 years old, and he really wants to live, dream, move forward, and one day say to himself, “I did it.”
