Maria, 13, Odesa Region
I started drawing when I was a child, in art class. However, I’m also passionate about the arts, especially theater. That’s where I find my strength and inspiration. I dream of seeing the show “Cabaret.”
Maria is 13 years old and comes from the Odesa region. She is a calm, reserved, and very brave girl who, even during this difficult period of treatment, maintains her inner strength and faith in a better future. Her biggest dream right now is to recover and return home to her normal life, where there is school, familiar places, and her favorite activities. Ever since childhood, Maria has loved to draw—at first, these were simple sketches during class, but over time, creativity became a special way for her to express herself and find peace. In addition to drawing, she is passionate about the arts, especially theater. It is in creativity that Maria finds inspiration, strength, and the chance to escape, even briefly, from the daily grind of the hospital. Her biggest dream is to see the play “Cabaret,” because for her, theater is a true source of emotion and wonder. It all started with weakness in her right hand—her thumb stopped moving properly. The family consulted doctors, had an MRI done, and that’s when they discovered a tumor in the cervical spine. This diagnosis was a major ordeal for the entire family. Maria has already undergone a complex surgery, two rounds of rehabilitation, and is currently undergoing radiation therapy. Another important stage lies ahead—further recovery and rehabilitation. At the same time, she continues her studies remotely, trying not to lose touch with her normal life and her dreams. “Dacha” has become a special place for the family. Here, surrounded by care and support, they feel right at home—warm, cozy, and at peace. It’s a place where everyone becomes like one big, friendly family, where the difficult journey of treatment becomes easier. Maria’s story is about the strength of a quiet but very resilient girl who finds inspiration in art, never stops dreaming, and confidently pursues her greatest wish—to be healthy and return home.
